In Search of the American Bullfrog
Of the many things I love most about my daily walks along the creek are the sounds I hear from the wildlife. Occasionally, the bullfrog calls stand out, and I follow the sound with the hope to see one.
The bullfrog bellow resembles the mooing of a cow, and this is how this particular amphibian got its name. Only the male bellows his melodious call, and it can be heard day or night. On this particular day, I was able to hone in on the area where the frog took up residence in order to record his sound, although I could not see him.
The bullfrog happens to be the largest of the frogs in North America, weighing up to 1.5 pounds (the female often larger than the male), and they are among the most wide-ranging of all North American amphibians, found in freshwater ponds, lakes, and marshes.
A bullfrog’s diet consists of anything they can fit into their mouth, from insects, mice and fish to birds and even snakes! They lie in wait for prey at night.
