National Train Your Dog Month

Posted by SusanStokes on January 14, 2012

January is National Train Your Dog Month

This month there are lots of activities online to help you learn more about your dog, and even your cat and rabbit.  I had the opportunity to connect with Mychelle Blake, MSW, CDBC, Executive Director, The Association of Pet Dog Trainers, and following is what I was able to publish in my Examiner column with regard to this subject.

”Every year, hundreds of thousands of pets are turned into animal shelters because their owners couldn’t find a reliable resource to help them with their pets’ behavior problems,” says Mychelle Blake, MSW, CDBC, Executive Director, The Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT). “Sadly, the end result is often euthanasia rather than rehoming the pet.”

In an effort to combat this unfortunate circumstance, the APDT has designated January as National Train Your Dog Month to bring awareness to the importance of socialization and training for all pets.

Says Blake, “January was selected as the perfect month because so many animals are adopted and brought home during the winter holidays. We hope to help families and their pets start the New Year off on the right paw with information on the behavior needs and training of their pets.”

The awareness campaign includes free educational webinars. Featured will be many well-known pet training and behavior professionals and experts.  These webinars will be available starting January through the APDT website. The website includes schedule information, professional bios, as well as fun downloadable resources on training and behavior.

Are you a member of  Facebook? APDT has also filled the month of January with a variety of live Facebook chats where anyone can “talk” in real time with professional training and behavior consultants on a variety of topics pertaining to the training and care of dogs, cats and even rabbits and parrots.  If you have behavior and training questions, you can join the chats to learn more about your pet.

Since 1993, the APDT has promoted education for dog trainers and others in the pet industry. With over 6,000 members who are willing and able to assist pet owners, the APDT is the largest professional organization for pet dog trainers in the world.  The APDT believes that a better understanding of our pets’ behavior can lead to happier, healthier and harmonious households for humans and companion animals.
