The Great Egret Encounter
My daily walks now include a nearby creek that appears rich wildlife including ducks, geese, rabbits, groundhogs, deer and a variety of birds. I was pleasantly surprised one day to encounter a Great Egret wading in the creek, obviously fishing for food.
Once again, smartphone in hand, I was able to capture this fabulous creature on video. And of course, rushed home to do some research.
These long-legged wading birds with long, S-curved necks have long, dagger-like bills with which they fish. Their typical diet includes fish, frogs, and other small aquatic animals. They will stand still and patiently watch for unsuspecting prey to pass by. Then, with startling speed, the egrets strike with a jab of their long neck and bill.
