Picking Up the Pieces and Giving Thanks

Animal rescue in the wake of Sandy…

As Thanksgiving Day approaches, I can only give thanks for having been spared the worst of Hurricane Sandy.  There were many downed trees and loss of electricity and internet access for several days in my area, but no major home damage for me and the kitties this round beyond some popped siding. Unfortunately, not true for others and their pets.

The kitties knew something was awry before the storm hit. When the power finally did come back on, they were cautious about wandering the house again, having hunkered down upstairs for several days while we rode out the storm and its aftermath.

Gemini found his “safe spot” before the storm.  He sat at the top of the stairs, away from windows and the chance of flying debris crashing in.  Smart kitty!

My maple in the back once again stood strong during this test of nature.  Last year, on the very same date of October 29, the maple bent to the ground under the weight of heavy snow and leaves without actually breaking. Although I can’t say the same for my butterfly bush.  I found it sprawled across my sidewalk, broken in half and blocking the path to my doorway.  It needed to be trimmed anyway, and Mother Nature took care of that, although in a harsh and roundabout manner.

With so many people and pets displaced due to Hurricane Sandy, I have tried to help by publishing storm preparedness tips, animal rescue updates and rescue effort stories. If you have an animal rescue effort you would like me to write about, please let me know.

Wishing you all a happy and restful Thanksgiving Day.
