It’s National Hug Your Cat Day, or is it?

Posted by SusanStokes on May 30, 2012

Did you hug your cat today?

There seems to be more and more holidays to celebrate with regard to our pets, and “National Hug Your Cat Day” is one of my favorites, of course.  I originally found it noted on May 30, but there seems to be a conflict on other calendars, and it is scheduled again for June 4.  So why not celebrate more than once?

Cat supporters in Los Angeles have taken this holiday very seriously and chose to honor “National Hug Your Cat Day” on May 30th by taking action with the help of the Huffington Post, as follows:

“More than 17,000 healthy or treatable animals were killed in Los Angeles shelters last year. And while City Council members and Angelenos come together to make Los Angeles a No-Kill City, there are still tens of thousands of animals that are already in shelters and sanctuaries that need homes now."

In honor of National Hug Your Cat Day, HuffPost LA is featuring local cats that are available for adoption as a part of their Los Angeles Animal Rescue series.

Check out 10 friendly felines from our local Best Friends Animal Shelter that are in need of a home. For more information on adoption please visit the How to Adopt section of the Best Friends website.”

When I read this, I felt the numbers of animals needlessly killed are staggering, and this is just one example of one city’s efforts to create awareness for this problem and try to solve it.

Makes you want to go hug your cat right now.
